The terbangan, also known as the rebana, is an instrument closely related to the tambourine, which is used in traditional and devotional music in Southeast Asia. Originating in Arab culture, its use has become a staple of Cambodian, Indonesian and Malay tradition. In Java, a variety called kompang has been used since at least the 8th century in Hindu and Buddhist ceremonies.
