Light therapy with INNOLUX

A light therapy lamp effectively compensates for the lack of natural light during the darkest seasons. More and more light therapy enthusiasts have succeeded, thanks to it, in overcoming the winter blues. A light therapy lamp is a pleasant way to improve your mood and energy when the sky is grey. Studies show that light therapy increases your energy level, improves your alertness and helps you stay motivated at work.

Do you suffer from lack of light?

During the dark season, many people suffer from the symptom of the winter blues, triggered by the shortening of days.

Almost 12% of Finns have a Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The mildest form of SAD, which is also the most common, is subclinical SAD, which affects about 27% of Finns. Only 10% of Finns think that these seasonal changes have no influence on their alertness.

Symptoms of sub-clinical SAD, or winter blues, include: lack of energy, daytime fatigue, withdrawal from social life, boredom, melancholy, carbohydrate dependence and weight gain.

Avantages

A bright light device efficiently compensates for lack of natural light in the dark season.

Bright light therapy is a quick, easy, and safe method to brighten your day.

Bright light therapy has been studied and used to treat the winter blues for over 30 years. Studies show that bright light therapy relieves winter blues symptoms by 60-90%.

Studies also show that bright light therapy helps increase daytime energy levels and alertness and maintain good work flow and motivation.

Bright light therapy helps maintain a stable circadian rhythm and makes waking up easier during the dark season.

Use a light therapy lamp

Innolux light therapy lamps are effective and easy to use.

Light therapy is a natural "hands-free" solution, which means it doesn't waste your time; you can read, enjoy breakfast, work or even watch TV at the same time.

Depending on the type of light therapy lamp you have chosen, the most effective distance is between 10 and 145 cm.

You will feel the first benefits of your lamp after only 15 minutes of use. Light therapy reaches its maximum effectiveness when used in the morning, as soon as you wake up.

The sun, source of life

Sunlight is our most essential need. Nothing would exist without it; moreover, the lack of sunshine quickly empties us of all vitality and energy. The amount of light is at its peak during the summer months, when the days are longest and sunniest.

The light level is measured in lux, the international unit of illumination. A lux is the amount of light produced by a candle, measured at a distance of one meter. On a typical summer day, the amount of sunlight outdoors is around 50,000 to 100,000 lux. In an office, the amount of light is 300 to 500 lux. In November, lighting can drop to 500 lux outside, while the illumination produced by normal indoor lighting is 10 to 100 lux. This is a thousand times less than the amount of natural light on an average summer day.

As the fall progresses, the days shorten and this phenomenon is a frequent cause of winter blues. Almost 12% of Finns have a Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The least severe form of SAD, which is also much more common, is subclinical SAD, also known as winter blues, which affects about 27% of Finns.

Users' experience has shown that regular light therapy helps to maintain good productivity at work. Office workers and their employers are particularly aware of the benefits of light therapy.

Employees working in shift work also found that light therapy helped to balance their irregular circadian rhythm. With well-planned schedules, this therapy can also significantly accelerate recovery in the event of jet lag.

A light therapy lamp allows you to enjoy the light of summer mornings even during the darkest winter months.

The circadian rhythm is regulated by melatonin, a hormone produced by the epiphysis. As a general rule, the body secretes this hormone at night. Melatonin is a kind of natural sleeping pill: when it is present in the body, the person feels tired.

Morning light is the most powerful external stimulus regulating the circadian rhythm. Of all the factors that regulate circadian rhythm, melatonin is the one whose role is best understood. Research has clearly shown that light strongly influences melatonin secretion.

When you wake up on a summer morning, the light stops the production of melatonin. In winter, on the other hand, when we wake up, it is always dark. If our body produces melatonin in the morning after waking up (as it does in the darkest months of fall and winter), our body clock is disrupted and our circadian rhythm is disrupted. This is how the "winter blues" appeared, which usually lasts from October to March. Symptoms of this disorder include dependence on carbohydrates and sugary foods, difficulty waking up, excessive drowsiness, lethargy and fatigue during the day. The shortening of days is therefore the main cause of the winter blues.

Summer morning light and light therapy allow us, in fall and winter, to stop the production of melatonin and maintain the synchronization of our circadian rhythm.

When melatonin production is stopped in the morning with light therapy, it starts in time, i.e. in the evening. To achieve maximum effectiveness, light therapy should be used in the morning, just after waking up.

Innolux light therapy lamps are effective and easy to use.

Innolux light therapy lamps can be used as part of light therapy and thus effectively compensate for the lack of natural light during the winter months. Innolux light therapy lamps are medical devices certified by Det Norske Veritas, which guarantees their efficiency and safety in use. Our lamps meet all the requirements of good light therapy, without any side effects, such as headaches or eye strain.

For the first two weeks, light therapy should be used

Depending on the type of light therapy lamp used, the device should be placed at a distance of 40 to 145 cm. This is the distance between the face and the lamp. The closer you are to the lamp, the more effective it is and the shorter the light therapy session can be. It is useless to look at the light directly, as long as it remains in your field of vision. Light therapy does not interrupt any of your daily activities; it allows you to continue reading, eating, working or watching television.

Research on light therapy

Light therapy has been a research topic in Europe and North America for nearly 30 years. It is also widely studied in Finland.

Research has provided promising results in the treatment of depression and sleep disorders in cases where medical treatment is prohibited (especially in Parkinson's disease and depression during pregnancy). The results of light therapy have also been encouraging in the case of pathological conditions associated with a clearly seasonal pattern or sleep disorders.

We have collected the latest international research results from national health institutes in the United States:

new research has highlighted the benefits of light therapy in terms of preventing daytime exhaustion and fatigue in patients with SAD and subclinical SAD.  This research shows that light therapy improves general well-being. This study, which focuses on the effects of light therapy on women suffering from depression during pregnancy, shows particularly promising results because there are no side effects to this therapy.
